Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and approximately 5.3 million people suffer from the disease. Our goal as a research group from the Florida Institute of Technology is to focus on the molecular aspects of AD to gain further understanding. Our main focus is on amyloid protein, which has been linked to AD as well as diseases such as Parkinson's and Type II diabetes, and the long-term brain damage that often follows head injuries. Members of our research group are undergraduate and graduate students utilizing a wide range of disciplines from engineering to mathematics to biology. Many of our students have been affected directly or indirectly by AD and have a passion for medical research of the utmost importance.

Dr. Shoahua Xu

Associate Professor
Biology Department, College of Science
Chemical Engineering Department, College of Engineering

Educational Background
Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Purdue University, 1989
BS in Biochemistry, Nanjing University, China 1983

Professional Experience
After coming to the United States in 1984, Dr. Xu received his Ph.D then completed post-doctoral training in the Physics Department at the University of California, San Diego. In 1992, he joined the University of Chicago as an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine to develop atomic force microscopy (AFM) for biomedical applications. Dr. Xu was able to apply AFM to many areas of biomedical research and has made numberous contributions to lipoprotein, amyloid fiber research as well as to the development of AFM techniques. In 2002, he joined the Pathology Department at the University of Pennsylvania as a senior research investigator. Using AFM and TEM, Dr. Xu identified most of the important intermediates in tau protein aggregation involved in Alzheimer’s disease. In 2004, he joined Florida Space Research Institute at Kennedy Space Center and Florida Institute of Technology to continue his work in applying molecular imaging tools to important biomedical and biological problems.
